The small bustling town of Kasane is situated in the far northeastern corner of Botswana, where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia meet. Besides being the place where Richard Burton remarried Elizabeth Taylor in 1975, Kasane is also the administrative capital of Botswana’s Chobe region, and a very popular place to enter the Chobe National Park or Game Reserve. Don’t be surprised if you see a hippo or elephant wandering down Kasane’s main road, because there are no fences between the village and the National Park!

Other points of interest near Kasane include the old baobab tree which used to be used as a gaol in the previous century, and the daredevils can try to tame the “Kasane rapids” in the Chobe River.

Chobe National Park can be divided into four ecosystems, the area around Kasane being in the Serondela or Chobe riverfront section. Look out for leopards lazing in trees. Elephant , buffalo and hippo frequent the area, and the birdlife is prolific.

The Savuti Marsh area is the second ecosystem in the Chobe National Park. This area is renowned for the annual migration of zebra, followed by predators. Here you can also see the giants at war, when the elephants start bullying one another.

The third ecosystem is the Linyanti Marsh in the northwest corner of the Chobe National Park. This is the region to visit if you want to see huge herds of elephant, prides of lion, wild dogs and rich birdlife.

Between the Linyanti and Savuti Marshes is a dry, grassy woodland, a great place to view eland. This is the fourth ecosystem of the Chobe National Park.
