AI-AIS - FISH RIVER CANYON
The spectacular and awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon is a sight you will not forget. Africa’s largest canyon (second only to the Grand Canyon) is situated in the southern part of Namibia, and is almost 160 km long, up to 27 km wide, and up to 550 m deep in places. Public viewpoints are at Hobas, which forms part of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The rest of the canyon is privately owned. The canyon has sites from the Stone Age, dating back from almost 50 000 years ago, as well as vistas and scenery that words almost cannot describe. There are some small, hardy mammals, but the birdlife is more prolific. The Fish River Canyon is the home of a legendary hiking trail of 5 days’ duration (the trail is accessible only during winter, and only for those with a current medical certificate – not for the feint-hearted!). The trail ends at Ai-Ais, where you can lounge in the healing waters of the hot springs (fortunately you can do this without having to endure the gruelling canyon trail…)
