SOSSUSVLEI, SESRIEM AND SURROUNDING AREA
Sossusvlei and Sesriem must undoubtedly be the highlight of the southern region of Namibia. Sossusvlei is a clay pan that was formed when the ever-moving sand dunes of the surrounding Namib desert interrupted the flow of the Tsauchab River. The “vlei” is surrounded by huge star-shaped sand dunes. If you are a keen photographer, this is the place to be. Dead Vlei is another place that offers many opportunities for unique photographs. Think white clay floor and dead camel thorn trees. Sesriem is the gateway to Sossusvlei and is named after the Sesriem Canyon (6 km from the Sesriem settlement). Legend has it that the name “Sesriem” was given by the Dorsland Trekkers, who had to attach six belts (made from oryx hides) to a bucket to reach the water on the floor of the canyon.
